New HRM and VO2 max

Yahoo! My new HRM arrived today! I am extremely excited and will be testing it out tomorrow at Spin and Boxing. My first thoughts are that of LOVE!

One feature of the RS300x that is really handy is a fitness test, which estimates your VO2 max from your resting heart rate. I decided to do the test tonight and I almost laughed when I saw the result! It said "elite".

Me? Elite fitness?

Are you sure?!

But sure enough, my VO2 Mac was 51, just within the elite fitness range for my age and gender (>49). I'm impressed! I certainly don't feel like I have fitness levels that warrant that title. In my mind I'm still quite unfit! I guess my mind needs to catch up to my body.

Meanwhile, I'll blog tomorrow about my thoughts on my new HRM. So far, so good!

Weigh-in Wednesday and some interesting stats!

I absolutely SMASHED myself this week. Weights galore, high resistance in spin class and lots of calories burned (total 5949 in the week). I ate the cleanest I have ever eaten in my life! I have now cut out all processed foods and feel absolutely amazing! My body feels smaller and I feel stronger and happier!

Yet when I jumped on the scales this morning I was shocked!

Umm... But that's a GAIN of 1.3kg?!!! How is that even possible?!

I decided to think rationally about this and got out my tape measure. Sure enough - the results were there in another form.

Measurements (comparison to last week at 77.7kg)
Chest: 99cm (-3cm)
Waist: 78cm (-3cm)
Belly button: 87cm (-1cm)
Hips: 104cm (-1cm)
Thighs: 96cm (-2cm)
Arm: 29.5cm (-0.5cm)

And the real kicker...

Body Fat Percentage: 29.2% (-1.8%)
Lean Body Mass: 56kg (+3.0kg!!!!!)

So next time you get disappointed about your weight results... Try measuring progress in other ways!

Insane Few Days

What a crazy few days at the gym!

3 days... 4,297 calories burned.

I have to say I'm pretty tired today! I did BodyCombat + BodyPump today (1211 calories gone!). It's now 2pm and I feel like having a nap!

One more workout (RPM tomorrow) at then I get my rest day.

I think I've deserved it. :)

Hungry for Change and Loving Life!

If I could live at the gym and exercise all day, every day - I would. Man, I feel so good!

I hit the gym this morning, with a goal of 1,000 calories. I rocked up to 45-minute RPM class and really gave it my all today! I absolutely KILLED it! I think I pushed harder during the entire class than I ever have! And the best part was, the instructor offered to continue the class to 1-hour for those who were keen! I had burned 830 calories in the hour and so only had 170 to go!

I jumped on the Elliptical for 10 minutes and voila! 1,000 calories!

Meanwhile, I came across a website this morning called Hungry For Change and I just finished watching the Hungry for Change documentary. It was so profound! If you haven't seen it, I strongly urge you to! For those on 12WBT, it will really resonate and hopefully help you to make even better decisions about what you're putting into your body.

It speaks a lot about processed foods and in particular, sugar and how eating those foods is a recipe for disaster. It's no surprise - how can food that can sit on a shelf for years be good for you? One thing that really stood out to me was the discussion on sugar and how it is addictive. I have personally experienced this and now make a concerted effort to avoid eating any food with added sugar.

"Obesity is not a problem, it is a solution"
Emotional eating is a band-aid solution to the stressors or other issues in our lives. I am an emotional eater and I have really struggled to get away from that. I started a food and thoughts diary and the results were quite shocking, which leads on to the next point.

"If you're upset, don't eat"
If I was feeling stressed, tired or emotional, I would eat HUGE amounts of food in comparison to when I was feeling happy and alive! It's a short term "solution" that puts you into a downward spiral. I have stopped covering my emotions with food and now FEEL them and acknowledge their presence!

I won't spoil the rest of the documentary for those who haven't seen it, but for me, it was the last little push that I needed to make the finer adjustments to what I'm putting into my mouth. It's time to do another kitchen clean-out and get rid of all this man-made processed crap! My diet is already pretty clean and healthy - I eat huge amounts of vegetables every day (2 x massive bowls of salads every day) with lean protein, but now it's time to get rid of all the pasta sauces, the rice crackers, the cereals... It's all full of crap that my body doesn't need. Yes, it may be more convenient, but it's wasted calories with very little nutritional benefit. And when you're eating only 1200 calories per day, you need to make each calorie count!

Which would you rather eat?

Or this???

Just looking at the first picture makes me sick! YUCK!

Rewards and HRM's

When I started 12WBT last year, I bought a second-hand Polar RS100 and since then I haven't done a workout without it! I am absolutely addicted to tracking my HR and calories burned! It really helps me to push myself and to be more aware of my body when I'm training. I bought the cheapest model (for running) just in case I didn't use it... But now I feel like I have outgrown the base model.

So I bought this today...

It's the Polar RS300xsd with foot pod! It won't be delivered until next week, but I am extremely excited about the new features with this upgrade!

My biggest issue with the RS100 was that it only saved the last workout. This was a problem when I was doing multi-sport activities, such as Pump + RPM + Weights in the one session, but wanted to capture data individually for each activity. That meant that I had to take photos of the data with my phone before I reset it for the next activity. The RS300x saves the last 16 workouts!!!!! Just this little tiny feature will change my world! Yeewww!

The other extremely cool functions are the foot pod and optional GPS! It's unfortunate that I'm not able to run at the moment to try it out, but that's something to look forward to once I'm back into it.

Happy training!!

Super Saturday Smash Session!

Call me crazy, but I can't think of a better way to start my weekend than spending almost 3 hours at the gym smashing out 2,015 calories. And this morning, that's exactly what I did! I drove home with the biggest smile on my face. Exercise is the best therapy ever!

I had set myself a 2,000 calorie challenge for this morning! I hadn't done anything like that since last year so I thought it was about time!

I started off with RPM and was disappointed to see our normal instructor was away. I drive farther than my normal gym specifically for his class, he's THAT good! The replacement was alright, but she didn't try to push the group as hard as our usual instructor, so I found myself dialing up the intensity much more regularly than she was asking.

I had a 20 minute gap between RPM and Pump, so I changed my shoes and hopped on the Elliptical! I had never tried the elliptical before, but I figured it was the closest to running that I am allowed at the moment! It was fun!

Pump was particularly great! The instructor took us back a couple of releases and ah, it brought back memories!! We ended up doing my absolute favourite Pump release and I smashed it out! I increased my biceps and squat weights and it felt so good!

At this point I had burned 1595calories, so with only 405 to go I jumped back on the Elliptical for 15 minutes, cooled down on the rower and spent 15 minutes stretching.

I feel on top of the world!!

Calories burned:
RPM: 690
Elliptical part 1: 231
Pump: 674
Elliptical: 250
Rower: 100
Stretch: 70

Total calories out: 2015!!!!

Weigh-in Wednesday!

Another loss this week! Very happy considering I was sick for the majority of the week and was unable to train.

Weight: 77.7kg
Loss: -1.5kg
Total loss: -3.4kg

I'm a little unhappy that I didn't meet my Week 4 goal of 75kg, but poor Easter ruined those plans! I'm still very happy with a 3.4kg loss in 4 weeks, particularly considering my injury. So no complaining here!

No tear...

But still no good.

As requested by my podiatrist, I had an ultrasound of my peroneous brevis and longus today to make sure I don't have a tear in one of my tendons. Thankfully I don't, but there's a lot of fluid (suggesting inflammation) around my peroneous longus, almost 5 weeks on from my initial injury. Great. My foot has flared up the last couple of days and the only change I made was only strapping for workouts. So I guess it's back to my morning ritual and strutting around all day in my fashionable foot accessory.

The unfortunate thing is 6 weeks is coming up fast. I was hoping to be back into it by then, but things aren't working out that way and my hopes for running the local half-marathon in June have well and truly faded. I can only cross my fingers that I'll be okay to do the 12km run instead, but if my current progress is anything to go by, I'll be on the sidelines for that one, too. It's really disappointing and I feel lost without my running. It's my stress reliever... My place where I go when I need a break from the world... Or when I'm bored... I am struggling without it. I am trying my hardest to eat clean and push on, but I'm finding it really difficult. I need to be able to stretch my legs and clear my head. Spin classes are helping to lessen the blow, but it's just not the same.

But sometimes in life these are the cards you're dealt and you just need to get on with it. I just have to be patient (and buy shares in Leukoplast!)

Good bye sickness...

HELLO GYM!!!!!!!

Ohhhhh it feels SO good to be back into it!!!!! The endorphins are flowing and I feel amazing! I hit the gym this morning and did an RPM class and really pushed myself hard knowing that I'd had the week off. It felt so good! I smashed out 700 calories! I probably shouldn't have pushed myself so hard coming off the back of an illness, but it felt right.

Cannot wait for weigh-in on Wednesday!!

Maybe daydreaming does work...

So I jumped on the scales today 'just coz'. Apparently I lost 1kg overnight. My weightgain over Easter is now 0.1kg... I can deal with that!!!

Maybe all this thinking about training works... Or maybe it's just because I'm sick. Either way, I'm happy!

Current weight: 78.2kg
Total loss: -2.9kg

This is torture

I'm still sick and all I want to do is train! I keep daydreaming about a massive 4-hr gym session full of running, weights, rowing and cycling... But all I can manage is light stretching and 30-seconds of running on a treadmill before I start to cough and splutter everywhere!

So if daydreams burnt calories I'd be kicking butt! Instead I am just eating 100% cleanly and riding the wave until I can get back to my normal life.

Orthotics and stuff

I had my first ever podiatrist appointment today and it was certainly enlightening!

To put it in a nutshell -- my feet are "extremely unstable". Great.

It was fascinating watching while my feet and legs were measured down to the millimetre! I even got a little excited when told to RUN! That's the most running I've done in weeks! Have you ever run on a treadmill barefoot before? It's an experience, let me tell you! It lasted only about a minute but despite the lack of footwear, I enjoyed every second!

The verdict is that I need to have orthotics to support my arch and correct the posture of my feet, so I'll be going back to get those fitted soon. I'm still not supposed to run until I have the orthotics, so the cycling and rowing continues. Hopefully I'll be back into running in time to enter a warm-up event for City2Surf!

Weigh-in Wednesday

Not surprising.

Weight: 79.2kg
Loss: +1.1kg
Total loss: -1.9kg

Woops. Oh well. Moving on!

If I was sick yesterday....

Then I am dying today.

I feel absolutely awful! I skipped the gym yesterday in the hopes that if I took it easy that today would be better. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way! I did go to work last night though (10 hrs finishing at midnight) and I struggled towards the end. And now I feel like I've been hit by a bus. There is no way I could even do the warm-up of the RPM class I had planned for today. So instead, I am going to rest and hope that this is as bad as it gets.

I am prepared for a weight gain tomorrow, but it'll be gone again soon enough.

That'd be right...

Just my luck!

I woke up this morning to find myself sick. Typical! I was supposed to do my 1500 calorie challenge this morning and it's just not going to happen! I slept 12 hours last night and could do it all again if I went back to bed! It certainly explains why I was feeling so tired yesterday.

I hate being sick! It spoils all my fun!

Easter slip!

So yesterday I had a bit of a slip. I was really stressed with everything going on at the moment and even though I'd been at the gym for 2 hours (double spin class) to try and let out some of my emotions, I reached for food by the end of the day. Stupid mistake! I ate several mini chocolate eggs. And boy did I feel sick afterwards. I don't think I'll be eating chocolate again for a very long time!

Unfortunately I don't think the scales will be tipped in my favour this week now, but we live and learn! Today was my rest day but I did a light session this morning (250cals) and I've set myself a 1500 calorie challenge for tomorrow to lessen the damage I've done.

Tomorrow's training session will be:
Cycle... Until I reach 1500 cals (or more if I feel like it!)

Now off to go visit my family for Easter. I don't think I'll be eating much today!

Weigh-in in 3 days...!

Weigh-in Wednesday!

After jumping on the scales this morning, I may have let out a bit of a squeal!

Weight: 78.1kg
Loss: -1.5kg
Total loss: -3.0kg

Again, not much exercise this week in comparison to what I would like, but my eating was 100% clean and in control! I am thrilled!

Treatment for DOMS?

I was still suffering from crippling DOMS a few days after my first Pump class in 3 months and I was a little apprehensive about heading to the gym. I really wanted to train though and figured I may as well at least give it a go!

And you know what? After my RPM and Pump classes, my DOMS disappeared! Problem solved!

The classes felt great! Obviously I am not at my peak for RPM - I didn't want to push myself too hard in fear of aggravating my injury, but I felt on top of the world by the end of the class! Pump was equally as good - I am loving the new release! I modified things again and did squats instead of lunges and reduced my weights a little, but overall I am really happy with where I'm at.

I'm back, baby!
