Today I had my first training session back since I sprained my ankle. It would have been on Monday, but I was donating blood and my ankle was still a little unstable. My ankle felt fine today, but boy did the run feel pretty average! I definitely need new shoes and I felt really lazy in the run. I was doing intervals of 1 minute fast - 1.5 minute slow. I only lasted about 15 minutes! How pathetic! But having said that, I didn't want to push myself too hard considering it was my first run back.

My biggest complaint was my calves... They were so tight and sore after only 10 minutes of running... I really think I need to stretch them out before I run and maybe change my running style. I should use my quads/hammies more.

I also did 15 minutes of 35km/hr cycling on the spin bike. Felt fine and studied at the same time. Gotta love multi-tasking!

This weekend I'll be buying new shoes.

So my plans of starting to train again this weekend were thwarted by my ankle deciding to sprain itself while walking the dogs Saturday night. So I spent all day today limping around... Great.

Hopefully it's better by Wednesday and I can get back into it.

Resuming Training After C2S

Today was the first day of training since last weekend. It took me a little while to recover from the C2S, but I think that it was mostly shoe-related. My shoes are old (slightly over 2 years old) and they have definitely died. I can't even stand in them for more than half an hour without them hurting my feet, so it's no wonder I had all sorts of muscular issues after the 14km run in them!

This weekend I am going shopping for new shoes. I tried on the Brooks Ravenna and the old Trance 8's on Thursday night. I quite liked the Ravennas - very comfortable and very light, but I don't know that the cushioning will be a bit too much for me. They felt VERY squishy which was nice in-store, but on a run, I don't know if I'll like it. The Trances were awful, so I don't know that I will like the 9's that just came out. I also want to try on the Adrenalines which apparently have a bit more support than the Ravennas but not as much cushioning.

So today I took my old crappy runners for what was supposed to be a nice and easy 4km jog with the dogs. Unfortunately I was too tired to wake up at 0545 to do the run, so went after uni this afternoon. The dogs decided that they didn't want to run further than 1.5kms (too hot, I think) so we then went on a 1-hour powerwalk. They were very well behaved and we kept a good pace. I then followed that with a 30-minute spin session (35-40km/hr) while watching Stargate Atlantis DVDs. All-in-all it was a great workout but I wish I could have done a bit more running. Not a bad way to ease back into training though.

So this week's training plan:

Saturday: 4km run (no dogs) + 1 hour walk (dogs) + 30-minute spin session
Sunday: Weights + 2km run (dogs)
Monday: Rest day (donating blood!)
Tuesday: Weights
Wednesday: Interval training (no dogs) + 1 hour walk (dogs)
Thursday: Weights
Friday: 4km run (no dogs) + 1 hour walk (dogs) + 30-minute spin session
Saturday: Weights
Sunday: Interval training (no dogs)

I had the best day today...

Woke up and immediately received cuddles from the puppies who are always very happy to see that we are awake! Managed a 30 minute sleep-in and still arrived at uni for study group 20 minutes early!

Meanwhile, I was supposed to return to my running program today for the first time since C2S, but the dogs thought it was too hot to run further than a km or so, so we went for an hour power-walk instead. I topped this off with a 30 minute spin session (averaging 35-40km/hr).

The best part about this day is that I don't feel like I've been slack or lazy and have crammed as much as I can into the day as possible! I usually feel pretty shit at the end of the day, mostly because I've procrastinated so much that I've got NOTHING done! So today is a nice turnaround. To top it off I just had a lovely hot shower and now I'm off to watch SYTYCD with the pups over dinner.

Race Plans for 2009

After my surprising result in City2Surf this year, I have decided to enter a few more fun runs to keep up the momentum. It's difficult finding runs that fit in my schedule, but I've managed to find a couple that suit.

I am disappointed that I won't be able to compete in the Women's Triathlon (fundraiser for breast cancer) this year, but I have Jedi's first obedience trial and two conformation shows to take Ahsoka to that weekend. I'll definitely be doing it next year though - I have wanted to do this for a few years!

Meanwhile, I am finally feeling back to normal so I'm hoping to go on my first run since C2S on Friday morning. I can't wait to get back into training but my body needs some down time! Next week I'll be getting my new runners so that will make a world of difference. I hope I can find a suitable pair!

City2Surf 2009

This was my third year of City2Surf, but the first year that I was taking it seriously. Well, semi-seriously!

In 2007, I ran maybe 60% of the first 6km, walked Heartbreak Hill and ran very little after it! My official time was 148 minutes or so, but this was one of the years without timing chips, so 20 minutes of that time was spent following the crowd to the start line!

In 2008, I walk/ran the first 6km and then walked the rest of the way with a friend. I never planned to run the whole way. We completed it in 138 minutes. This was the first year of timing chips, so the timing is accurate.

This year, I had decided to run the first 6km non-stop, walk Heartbreak Hill and then try to do as much running as I could to the end. I felt fantastic in the first 6km and even ran a few hundred metres up HBH before deciding my calves couldn't take it anymore. From the top of HBH to the end I ran the majority of the way, only walking 1-2 parts of the hill components. I stopped and took some photos on HBH and had a chat to one of my friends doing first aid with St Johns. It was a great run! I practically died at the 10km mark but pushed myself to keep running even though I was going very slowly! The last km hurt really badly, but I got there in the end! My official time was 106 minutes - only 6 minutes off being eligible for the green group next year! I was pretty shocked by that - a PB by over 20 minutes! Considering I didn't train at all for this event, I am really pleased! The dogs and I did four 2km runs in the weeks coming up to the event, so I definitely wasn't very prepared!

I have signed up for the 9km bridge run in September and will be entering a few other 5-10km fun runs to finish off the year. My major goal is to run the C2S in sub-100 minutes and run the Sydney Half Marathon in 2010. I will definitely be training for that one!

Meanwhile, I am in desperate need of new running shoes... My current shoes are over 2 years old now and they're well and truly dead!

Back on the band wagon

So things kinda fell apart earlier this year... Twice. But I'm back and doing well! The dogs have been joining me on some runs and I've been hitting the weights almost daily. Lost 2kg so far!

City2Surf is in 2 weeks and despite my intentions I don't think I will be running the whole thing. I didn't start preparing early enough. Oh well, I'll keep preparing and do my best on the day!

Still going!

I completed Week 5, Day 1 today! 5 minute run, 3 minute walk, 5 minute run, 3 minute walk, 5 minute run.

I was a bit worried about this one because I have been struggling with the 2nd 5 minute runs from last week, but there was no need! This was almost 'easy'! Maybe I'm just getting used to pushing through... Either way, I'm going to have to push pretty hard on Day 2 - there are 8 minute runs in there! I haven't run that long in one stretch for about a year.

So I've been continuing with the C25K program and completed Week 4, Day 2 this morning despite the disgusting muggy heat! It felt great except for the last few minutes where I really slowed down.
I worked out that I ran 2.4km today (thanks Google Earth!) which ended up taking 16 minutes. That's 3 minutes off my goal. OUCH! I suppose you would expect that though, seeing as I am only in week 2 of getting back into running!

Next week will be fun with the 8 minute runs and then a 20 minute run non-stop... Hopefully the weather cools down so it's a little more pleasant.

C25K - Week 4, Day 2

So I took a little while off after Jedi's desexing operation as he could not be left unsupervised because he was so unwell... I ended up getting back into it on Monday and today was my 2nd day of Week 4.

I worked out in the oval there are 4 trees that I can use as markers so that I run the same distance every time. Going on Google Earth, the distance around the oval (using the trees to make it a square path) is 375m per lap.

Today I ran 6 laps + 2 horizontal ends of the path which adds up to exactly 2.4km!!!! Adding up the time that it took me to run that, I am 3 minutes behind on my deadline! It took me 16 minutes of running to get there. Ouch! But hey, I am only 2 weeks into my running program, so really I'm not doing TOO badly!!

Anyway, one more day of Week 4 and then it's Week 5 which consists of:

Day 1:
Jog: 5 minutes
Walk: 3 minutes
Jog: 5 minutes
Walk: 3 minutes
Jog: 5 minutes

Day 2:
Jog: 8 minutes
Walk: 5 minutes
Jog: 8 minutes

Day 3:
Jog: 20 minutes (3.2km)

It seems like a big jump, but she'll be right!

Wow, it's been a long time!!!!!! So much for getting fit while I was at uni! I have my PFT coming up in a month so I thought I better get cracking! I have to do a 2.4km run in 13 minutes, 25 situps and 8 pushups. I can do the situps still, but the pushups and the run are going to be difficult!

I started running again on Thursday last week. I decided to do the Couch to 5K program but started at Week 3 because the first two weeks looked too easy. Today I finished week 3, so on Thursday I will begin week 4.

I am absolutely loving the running though... It is making me feel happier, more energetic, I'm eating less and I'm just feeling great! I am kicking myself for being such a bum last year and not keeping up with my fitness. I seriously think that last year's study would have been much easier had I kept up my running. But, we live and we learn and this year I am determined to keep running. I just need to get into a pattern.

I've also started swimming again and absolutely loving it! There is an aquatic centre just down the road and I have been going there every few days. On Sunday I managed 500m breast stroke and 250m freestyle before I had to leave. It's really fun!

Okay my stats... Keeping in mind that I put on 1.5kg over Christmas! WOOPS!

Fitness day

I completed Day 2 of Week 3 in the Couch to 5K program yesterday. It was actually much easier than Day 1 - probably because I knew what to expect, but I hope that means I can return to my previous fitness level pretty quickly.

After our run I decided to go for a swim and do some laps. I haven't done lap swimming in years, but I thought I would try and push myself. I completed 500m of breast stroke and 250m of freestyle non-stop. I could have kept going with the breast stroke for hours, but the freestyle required a lot of effort! I had somewhere to be after swimming, so I wasn't able to stay for as long as I would have wanted, but it was still nice! I think the run+swim is something I will definitely do again.

A new start

It has been almost a year since I was at my fittest, running 10-15km a week... Then I started medicine and forgot all about my fitness! It was not my intention, but days turned into weeks which turned into months... And then you convince yourself that it'll hurt too much to go for a run because you're so unfit... and so there you remain! I have been meaning to start again these holidays, but there has always been an excuse - the latest one that it's too hot! So when I woke up this morning and saw that it was overcast and cool, I knew had I run out of excuses!

So before I had a chance to second-guess my decision, I quickly put on my running gear and went out the door! I had decided to do Couch to 5K to get started, but realised that week 1 and 2 were probably a little TOO easy for me. So I started at week 3, day 1. It went well - It hurt, but I did it. I threw in some hills and managed to keep going...

Now I feel absolutely awesome! I had forgotten how good I feel after I run!!!! Why did I stop!?!!!!
