Loop the Lake

A couple of weeks ago my Uncle put down the challenge to ride in Loop the Lake this year. Basically it is a fund raiser for John Hunter Children's Hospital play therapy program. It's a good cause, plus it's a good opportunity to go on a long ride!

There are 3 options - 16km, 50km or 85km. At the moment I am deciding between 50km and 85km as I haven't really been on the bike much lately (focusing on running) and I am not quite sure if I'll be able to keep up if I do 85k! In preparation I have purchased some new slick tyres and will be spending the next 6 weeks training my butt off (literally, I hope!).

I will update on my progress here.

High on Endorphins..

I just went for a run... Twice. I figured I had better get a good run in as I am starting to feel sick (just a cold).

I ran my 2.4km lap and then another 1 - 1.5km after a few minutes break. I then walked around the park again, so I was gone for about half an hour. And oh-mah-gosh I feel good!! I really need to do more long running sessions! Endorphins are addictive...

Anyway, here are my stats:

Distance: 2.4km
Time: 13 minutes 22 seconds
Pace: 8:58/mi (5:34/km)
HR: 128bpm at finish
Comments: Felt really good throughout the entire run. Was a very comfortable pace.

That hurt.

Distance: 2.4km
Time: 12 minutes 30 seconds
Pace: 8:23/mi (5:13/km)
HR: 160bpm at finish

I am going to go die now...

Fighting Fit and Ready to Go!

I decided to run the beep test again today... So I walked down to the netball courts where I had previously measured out 20m, put in my ipod and off I went! This time I easily made it to 6.5 without any issues at all!! I was running in the 4's and 5's thinking that it was too easy to be almost finished, but sure enough I got there with plenty of puff left!

Getting better?

Thanks to bradsmith281, I decided to have a look at my running times since I started timing myself on 2.4km runs. I have to run it in less than 13 minutes (14 minutes once I turn a year older this year!)

So, let's take a step back in time! I started running back in June. Once I was able to get 6.5 I decided to start working on my 2.4km runs. My first measured time was in October.

17 minutes
11 min : 24 seconds/mi

15 minutes

14 minutes 4 seconds

13 minutes 44 seconds

2.4km (new shoes!)
12 minutes 51 seconds

12/11/07 - PB
12 minutes 16 seconds

2.4km (0530hrs run)
13 minutes 57 seconds

2.4km (very tired tonight)
13 minutes 48 seconds

So as you can see, I peaked in November and something happened between then and now. Don't ask me what, because I really have no idea and haven't really been doing anything different (aside from a few missed running days here and there). Oh - I did stop going to the gym (weights) so I may have lost some lower limb muscle mass...

The plan is now to run more often and for longer distances (2 x 2.4km with minimal break in between and start doing some uphill runs.

If anyone has some suggestions feel free!

New time slot

I just got back from a run... Yes, it's 5.45am! Last night I decided that I would try running in the morning, because: a) I am a morning person and b) I am always too tired/lazy/hungry/busy to run in the afternoon and I don't feel that I'm improving on my running because I hardly ever go!

It was really incredible this morning! The sun was rising, there was dew on the grass, and the morning mist rising from the other side of the park. It was quite surreal! It didn't really help me run any better, but at least now I feel totally pumped for the rest of the day! I think this might become a new habit.

Oh, and for the record, I ran a 13:57. No where near the 12 minutes 15 seconds I was doing 2 months ago, but better than the 17 minutes when I first started!!! I will keep at it and maybe go for another run this afternoon. We'll see.
