Beep test!

I ran the Beep test again today and got 6.8 - at that point I figured it was good enough! I actually felt really good when I was running and probably could have gone to 7.5+!

Another PB!

Woo! I beat my last run time this afternoon!! I don't feel like I'm running any faster, but I guess I am!!!!!

Distance: 2.4km
Time: 12 minutes, 16 seconds.
Stops: 5 second power walk before I realised that I wasn't actually in need of a break! *shrug*
HR: not measured

It's nice to see that I am getting faster... I find that knowing I have run the 2.4km non-stop before gives me the confidence to push through because I know I will make it to the end.

12 minutes and 51 seconds...

This morning I decided that I needed new running shoes (I bought my current runners 2 years ago) so I went shopping and after much frustration (I hate shoe shopping) I settled on a pair of Brooks Dyad 4’s. This afternoon I went for a 2nd run to ‘try them out’.
My last couple of runs I have been really close!! Well, guess what… I got under 13 minutes! WOOHOO! I picked up the pace overall and made it with 9 seconds to spare. *phew*!

Distance: 2.4km
Time: 12 minutes and 51 seconds
Stops: None
HR at finish: 108bpm

Now I plan on increasing the distance (e.g. 2 of my 2.4km laps) and speed. YAY!!!!!!! By the time I have to do this test (some time next year if I get in) I should be able to do it well under the 13 minutes!

I'm singing in the rain...

Make that running in the rain! I decided last night that I would go running today regardless of the weather, and I am glad I did! I went on another 2.4km run and it felt really good! The fact that I had drizzles of water being dropped on me to keep me cool may have made the difference!

Distance: 2.4km
Time: 13 minutes 44 seconds
Stops: NONE!

I felt really good for the first 10 minutes, and then realised that I had probably taken it too easier for the majority of the run and had to pick up the pace quite a bit for the last 3-4 minutes. That was pretty painful! But, my goal today was to run the whole distance with no stops so I am really happy with how I went!

I may even go for another run this afternoon. I'm PUMPED!

So close!!!!!!!!!!

As planned, I did another run this afternoon...

Distance: 2.4km
Time: 14 minutes, 4 seconds
Stops: 1 (swapped to power walk for 20 seconds)

I feel really tired after about 1km - I can keep going, but my strides shorten and I don't feel I have the energy to pick up the pace for an extended period. Hopefully the more I run the easier it will get and my time will just wittle away...

Fit again!

Back in July I scored 6.5 on the beep test, and then I slackened off to the point where I hadn't run for over a month!! Anyway, I did the beep test again this morning and got 6.5 again!!!!!!!!! Wooh! This time I could have kept going, and I probably could have at least reached 7.0, but I stopped myself. I feel pretty damn happy about it!

Meanwhile, I'll be going for a longer run this afternoon to keep my endurance running up.

Me? Play football??

I was lucky enough to be asked by The Boy's work to fill in for their mixed touch football team - they were short a few girls for this big competition. Now, I hate football. I don't understand the game, I have only been to one football game in my life and I have absolutely no idea about the rules. But I said yes (something that I was regretting at 8 o'clock this morning).

We rocked up and I got educated about the rules of football so that I knew enough to actually play the game without looking like a fool, and was then thrown into the deep end! We ended up playing 4 games and to my surprise I actually ended up enjoying myself! I didn't score any tries, but I did what I was told and by the end of it I knew (sort of) what I was doing! It reminded me of how much I enjoyed playing team sports when I was younger, and now I want to start playing again! I don't care what it is - I'll even join a touch footy comp!

Oh, I guess I should mention that we won 1 and lost 3. Oh well. No injuries, so that makes up for a lot!

Getting fitter...!

I went for a run on Sunday: Distance: 2.4km
Time: 17 minutes
No. of stops: 3
HR at finish: 160bpm

Today I decided to time my run again and ended up beating my time by 2 minutes!
Distance: 2.4km
Time: 15 minutes
No. of stops: 1 (+ one 10 second stop to drink from the bubbler)
HR at finish: 120bpm

I am finding that my breathing is a lot easier when I am running and my legs don't hurt at all! So now I just need to work on my speed!

Mood: Relaxed

Meanwhile, I went for a run again today... I ran 2.4km in 17 minutes (stopped 3 times for ~5 min total). It's an accomplishment seeing as I had stopped exercising for about 5 weeks! It felt really good, and hopefully I'll be able to build on that to run even further/faster. I also bought a skipping rope today!!! I haven't done skipping since I was a little kid so it was a rather funny experience!! At least I'll be able to do some cardio work on the balcony when it's dark!!

This morning was the first day of Boot Camp!! It started at 0800 hours with us collecting our dog tags with our new names for the next 5 weeks. From then on, I was to be known as 'Watch Dog'! After carrying a whole bunch of equipment to the park including a few 2x4's, we started off with a nice warm-up jog (at this point some people were already piking out!!). We did a lot of running, push ups, and various activities which all added up to a very good workout. Our team also won the final challenge which was great! Surprisingly, I didn't feel completely pushed today so I am certainly a lot fitter than I thought I was! But who knows what is going to happen during the next 4 sessions... Our trainer, err... Sergeant is going to start cranking the dial no doubt!

Meanwhile, my knee hurts now from alternating between dropping prone onto the ground and standing really quickly. I think I'll skip that part next time and just run instead.

And the results are in!

So after about 5 minutes of The Boy examining the extremely small print and thousands of other names of people who finished the City2Surf around the same time as me, we finally found my finishing time!!

I did it in about 112 minutes once you take into consideration the time I was just standing still when the HSBC group's horn went off and the time that it took for me to actually get to the starting line!! I'm quite happy with that - I was aiming for around 100 minutes and I did it!! If only I had run a little faster, or a little more consistently and I might have been able to run in the 2nd 'fast' group next year! Maybe next time I'll get there.

I made it!!

So I ran the City2Surf today!! I can't believe how many people were there!! 65000 people!!!!! It made it hard to run with so many people around!! It was like dodgem-running!! Mostly because there were *so* many people walking even from the beginning... It was kind of fun, but I would imagine if you were taking it seriously it would piss you off! My goal was to run the first 6km, which didn't really end up happening because of all the people and I wasn't feeling the best. I walked all of heartbreak hill, but then ran most of the way from the 10km mark. I'm happy with how I went, particularly as I have never run 14km in my life before and was pretty close to the 100-minute mark! All things considered (particularly the 5 minute crawl to get to the starting line after the horn had gone off!!), I think I did it in 110-minutes. We'll see what my "official" result is on Tuesday. In terms of injuries -- my right knee is a little sore (I think from the downhill running) and my legs are a little tender!!

Meanwhile, I now have my sights on doing the Sydney Half Marathon early next year... If you can do 14km, then 21km isn't too much further!!!!!!

Monday, July 30, 2007

So I started training again yesterday (I've been a touch [read: very] lazy for the past 3 weeks!!). I just realised that the City2Surf is on in only 2 weeks!! I had no idea that it was that close! So to start training again I decided (stupidly) to go for a 45 minute run! Let me just say that this is a BAD idea if you haven't done much running for a while!! I felt pretty good after the run, but this morning woke up with incredibly sore hip flexors and have had difficulty walking today (particularly when getting up after sitting for extended periods). So I took today off training to recover but am going to get right back into it tomorrow.

My goal for the City2Surf 2007 is to run the entire way until Heartbreak Hill (which is at the half-way point), then walk up that hill, then run the rest of the way. Unfortunately my legs don't cope well with stopping and starting so I may even try and run up the hill because if I run without stopping I can run for as long as I want, but if I stop I really struggle to keep going no matter how much I stretch my calves.

So I have 12 days of training to go...

Meanwhile, I am also thinking of starting triathlon one day to combine my love of the three sports. I think adventure racing (mtn bike, kayak, run) would be fun too. The idea of training for all three of those sports though is mind boggling! I think I'll stick with cycling and running for the moment.

I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I mentioned a few posts back, I was going to re-do the beep test today. The highest I had scored so far was 4.5 which is absolutely abismal!! I've been training quite hard to get 6.5. To be honest, I think the highest I've ever scored (even at my fittest as a teenager) was in the 5's, so I've been VERY worried that I would never get there.

But, today -- I DID IT! 6.5 on the dot. I could not run any further and my lungs are still burning, but I got there!!! It was a really weird feeling while I was running knowing that I was beating my old score and not feeling exausted yet!! So it looks like all this training is paying off and I am really starting to see results!! At the very least it is certainly good motivation to keep going with my training.

Thursday, June 28, 2007

Tonight I ran for 16 minutes non-stop. That is the longest since I started training in March.

When I started running 3 months ago, I could only run for approximately 45 seconds before feeling like my lungs were going to cease functioning! I scored 3.3 on the beep test the first time I did it (immediately after however, I repeated it and scored 4.3).
Since then I haven't really tested myself on the beep test (scheduled for Saturday), but I have been working on running for longer and longer with interval training, only gradually upgrading approximately 30 seconds for each interval, weekly. But tonight, I decided to run as long as I could before my heart rate went up too high (otherwise I felt really good!). 16 minutes!! Although it's nowhere near my 8km/day runs I used to do, it is certainly an improvement on my 45 seconds ending in a collapse!

I'm thinking about doing the City 2 Surf in August now!! It's only 14km - it's doable!!

Initial Fitness Test Results

As promised, here are my initial fitness test results from 9 June 2007.

Weight: 80kg
Height: 183cm (6ft)
% Body fat: 37 (from memory - seems a little high!!!)

Aerobic Fitness Test
Test Protocol: Treadmill Bruce
Max MET: 7.1
Peak HR: 167
Peak Spd: 6km/h
Peak incline: 12%
Peak RPE: 14

ie. I'm really crap! Well, it actually shows that my VO2 max is "good" (when I run the beep test I get "poor"). My heart rate shoots up very quickly (too quickly!), however on a positive note it also comes back down quite fast too, which is probably a result of my interval training!! So they have recommended that I do continuous exercise at a high heart rate (155-165bpm) to increase my VO2 max instead of interval training.

We will be ending the competition in approximately 3 months, so I will be repeating my results then. We also did situps, pushups and squats, however I was not given my results of that.

Fitness testing

Yesterday a group of people I know (including myself) got fitness tested, to commence our "Biggest Loser" competition. We're all part of a volunteer first aid company, and had decided that some of us needed to lose weight. I personally don't want to lose weight, but thought I could give some support by helping with numbers and being there during the challenges and training. Plus, it would mean that I would get free fitness testing!!

It was quite funny actually - most of the people there do no form of exercise at all. It was kind of like watching Nerds FC but without the nerd component!! Nah, I'm just teasing. I actually feel really sorry for them because if I am this sore today and I exercise 6 days per week, imagine how sore THEY might be!!! Anyway we are getting our results emailed to us soon, and I will post them up (they are probably really embarassing for the amount of exercise I do! I am still very unfit!!).

On a side note, you can tell where my focus lies when I am waiting for GAMSAT/Interview/Offers... Better this than sitting on my butt doing nothing!!

What a workout!

(borrowed from here)

So last night I decided to book myself in for my first free personal training session at the gym. I thought, Why not, I may as well get someone to give me feedback on what I'm doing. So, tonight I met with my trainer, and boy did he give me a workout!! Turns out I am doing the right thing, but he pushed me that little bit further that I haven't been doing on my own and I feel great! Mind you, it was totally painful at the time, but I feel good now that the pain has worn off!! Instead of my walk/run interval training he has upgraded me to run/run but with high vs low intensities. Then we hit the weights and I really killed myself! My legs were wobbling like jelly in an earthquake and I pushed when I didn't think I had any more to give!! In just one hour I felt like I did more than when I do 2 1/2 hours on my own. It was definitely well worth it! He also made me realise my weaknesses and the muscles I really need to strengthen up.

I used to think that I wouldn't like having a personal trainer, but tonight was much more than what I expected. He was really informative and supportive and seemed to know exactly what he was doing!! He also knew just the right moment to push me when I was about to quit! It was fantastic! I think I'll continue on with the workout he gave me but book in to see him once a month so that he can yell at me some more and keep me on track! haha

Ohhhh the pain!!!!!

Tonight I decided to do something different at the gym and take a class and oh my gosh I am soooo sore!!!! I did BodyPUMP which is basically a class with bar weights. And boy do they know how to make you work your butt off (literally!!) in the space of one hour!! I really enjoyed it! It took a little getting used to (was a bit slow in knowing what was going on!!), but I'm sure that will improve with practice. But boy are my arms sore!! I can hardly lift my arms above my head without feeling as though they're going to stop functioning at any second!!! At least I came away feeling like I'd had a really good workout!!!

I'm not usually much of a class type person, but maybe I'll try another one soon just for some variety. I'm definitely going to start doing spin classes though, but I think I need to increase my fitness some more before I decide to do that!!!!

Problem solved!

As you know I've been struggling to keep up with my exercise program now that it's become darker earlier in that I just don't have time now to do a proper run. For the last week or so I've been trying to work out what I can do instead - like get up earlier (can't because it's pitch black already when I wake up!) or join a gym!

So I called around to a couple of gyms in the area to find out prices, and I was suprised how reasonable they were! I found a free 7-day pass on the internet for my chosen gym, so I went tonight to see what it was like. I ended up being there for just under 2 hours doing constant exercise!!! I have to say, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would! Of course it's not as good as running in the outdoors, but it's certainly more flexible and has many different machines to work out on.

So - the verdict? I'm joining a gym! I also get a personal trainer every 6 weeks to monitor how I am going! Hopefully that will point me in the right direction!

I'm so...

I have been running my butt off for the past few weeks, going for at least 3 runs/week. Today I decided to re-do the beep test to see how much I have improved. And well.. *cough*... I only got 4.0!! Let's compare this to my last result in end of March which was 4.6!!! I SUCK! I suck so badly!!!!!!! Oh well, I can at least feel the difference when I'm running - I don't feel like I'm hyperventilating or going to die after a few minutes!! But it looks like I might need to have a rethink about how I am training. Or, maybe I am just a crap cardiovascular person and it will take me forever.

Meanwhile, my muscles have grown through the roof in a very small amount of time! Maybe I'm more suited to being a muscle woman rather than a runner!! I can do an arm hang for 16 seconds, and do 20+ pushups in one go! I can do over 50 situps too (I stop at 50 because of boredum, not sore abs!)

Oh well - I guess I'll just have to keep on working on the running... Anything to distract from the imminent arrival of the you-know-whats next week!

Game on!

I realised I hadn't blogged much about my fitness goals lately, so I guess I should give a bit of an update. I'm up to week 3 of my new fitness program and have mostly stuck to what I planned (impressed?!). There was one week there where I didn't really have any time to run because I was getting home in the dark, but this week I have made a concerted effort to leave work on time despite how much work I still have to do! I also bought some 5kg weights last night because my usual 2.5kg weights are getting too light! The 5kg weights actually make me feel as though I'm doing something now! I'm at the point now when I can do 20+ pushups non-stop and 50+ situps non-stop, and I am certainly seeing the results! No more tuck-shop-lady arms for me! They're getting buff! I haven't repeated the beep test yet, but I did try and run for as long as I could on Monday and ended up running for about 12 minutes straight! I know, still not fantastic, but it's better than the 2 minutes I started out with!!!!

Still raining...

So much for running today...! It was pouring!! I've still been adhering to my indoor program (weights, stretches, situps, pushups), so that's something!! They say the rain will clear tomorrow afternoon... Here's hoping!! Otherwise I might just have to go buy a raincoat!

Fitness Update

I did the beep test again today and have improved my score again.

Score: 4.6
VO2 Max: 28-ish (ie. poor - at least it's not VERY poor anymore!)

I find that I can run a lot further in one go now, as long as I just keep on running... The beep test is hard for me because I have to stop every 20m.

Beep test!

I went for a run earlier today, and managed to improve my beep test score to 4.4 (I know, not much of a difference, but still a personal best!). I feel that I could do better, but I guess I am not the type to push myself to utter exhaustion!! Maybe I should - I would imagine it would make me fitter a lot faster!! Either way, I'm going for another run this afternoon.

Time to get fit!

I decided on Sunday in my boredom that I would go for a run. Now to fill you in, I used to be an extremely active person, play numerous sports multiple times per week. While I was in uni I used to run 8km/day. Now - well... I ride my bike, but that's about it. So on Sunday, I thought, "Ok, I'm going to have a go of the beep test, and see how fit I am!" I jumped on the net, downloaded a free copy, loaded it onto my iPod and off I went to the park.

But uhh, unfortunately it wasn't at all as rosy as I thought it would be. It's embarassing to admit that I scored 3.3 in the beep test!! This equates to "very poor" cardiovascular fitness on my part!!!! I can't believe it! I used to easily score 5.5+ in school!!

Anyway, so I have been going for runs around the park since (even with my sore muscles), and I repeated the beep test and scored 4.3!!! So hey, if I can improve by a whole section in 2 days, I will be fit in no time!! :)

I'll try and blog my scores on here (hopefully I won't go backwards!)
